In 1889, Mary Caroline Blair shocked society by marrying George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the 3rd Duke of Sutherland, just four months after the death of his first wife.

After the 2nd duke's death in 1861 the manor continued to descend with the dukedom. Most of the manorial estate, except in Donnington Wood, was sold by the 5th duke (d. 1963) in separate lots in 1914 and 1917.
