Edward Sapir proposed that PIE *dak^ru- ‘tear’ was really *wdr-H2ak^ru- ‘bitter water’ or similar (published posthumously in 1939, see Manaster Ramer 2024). This *wd- > d- would not fit known sound changes, but the semantics seem good.
