The prime minister of Japan (Japanese: 内閣総理大臣, Hepburn: Naikaku Sōri-Daijin) is the head of government and the highest political position of Japan. The prime minister chairs the Cabinet of Japan and has the ability to select and dismiss its ministers of state.
The current prime minister is Fumio Kishida, who assumed office on 4 October 2021. There are currently ten living former prime ministers. The most recent former prime minister to die, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated on 8 July 2022.
Fumio Kishida (岸田 文雄, Kishida Fumio, born 29 July 1957) is a Japanese politician who has served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) since 2021. A member of the House of Representatives, he previously served as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2017 and as acting Minister of Defense in 2017.
