Há 5 dias · The land in Lew was sold to John Jones of Worcester before 1863, when he sold it to Christ Church, Oxford; in 1865 the rest of the estate was sold with the manorial rights also to Jones, who conveyed much of it to Jesus College, Oxford.
In the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th it became necessary, on account of the increase in numbers, to make large additions to the accommodation in College. For this purpose Jesus was fortunate in its site.
Há 6 dias · Nicholas Wadham, the founder of this college, was born in 1532 of a good Somerset family of Merifield, near Ilminster, and was educated at Oxford, at either Corpus Christi or Christ Church. (fn. 1) In 1555 he married Dorothy, daughter of Sir William Petre of Writtle, Essex, and in 1578 succeeded his father.
