The statue of the Duke of Wellington outside Register House was unveiled in a highly patriotic ceremony on 18 June 1852, the thirty-seventh anniversary of his greatest victory at Waterloo. The old general, by then 83, was not present, but many veterans he commanded in the battle were there to hear him hailed as an outstanding British military hero.
Dinner services by Sèvres, Meissen and the Berlin Factory dominate the room along with a rich collection of silver and silver. The rosewood cases around the room date from Wellington’s day and they contain many of his numerous dinner services. The 2nd Duke opened parts of the house, including the Museum room, after his father’s death in 1852.
