Lerwick ( / ˈlɜːrwɪk /; Scottish Gaelic: Liùrabhaig, Norwegian: Leirvik) is the main port of Shetland Islands, Scotland. Its population was 6,958 in the 2011 census. It also is the second largest port in the Northern Isles and the most northernmost town in the United Kingdom .
Historie. Lerwick. Leir Vik – slambugten – blev dens navn på grund af, at kystlinjen vedvarende skulle forstærkes. Fort Charlotte bygget 1665 og navngivet efter kong George 3. 's dronning, et af Skotlands bedst bevarede forsvarsanlæg. Fra Fort Charlotte bevogtede først skotterne og senere englænderne byen og sejladsen på Bressay Sound.
