Riding on these cars affords one a 360 view of the beaches and tropical forest below. The cables are replaced regularly and they avoid shuttling tourists during bad weather.

The cable car has two stops: the first one is at Morro da Urca (elevation 722′ or 220m), and the second/last stop is at the summit, Sugarloaf mountain (not sure mountain is fitting here), with 1,299′ (396m) elevation. The cable car operation opened in 1912. The four gondolas we were in, have no a/c.

There are two cable cars, one up each mountain, that you can ride to get to the top of Sugarloaf. Or, if you feel like you need a workout, take the short hike up Morro da Urca and catch the cable car to Sugarloaf.
