Suite Française beginnt im Juni 1940 mit der Bombardierung von Paris. Die Städter flüchten vor den Angriffen aufs Land, auch in den kleinen Ort Bussy. Dort lebt Lucille (Michelle Williams) mit ihrer Schwiegermutter Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas), die sich weigert, die Realität anzuerkennen und deshalb unverdrossen weiterhin die Pacht von der armen Landbevölkerung eintreiben will.

Suite française (French pronunciation: [sɥit fʁɑ̃sɛːz]; 'French Suite') is the title of a planned sequence of five novels by Irène Némirovsky, a French writer of Ukrainian-Jewish origin. In July 1942, having just completed the first two of the series, Némirovsky was arrested as a Jew and detained at Pithiviers and then Auschwitz , where she was murdered, a victim of the Holocaust .
