Der Landkreis Wolfenbüttel liegt knapp südlich der Mittelgebirgsschwelle und wird durch Höhenzüge wie den Hainberg, den Salzgitter-Höhenzug (beide in der Samtgemeinde Baddeckenstedt) und den Elm im Osten des Landkreises geprägt. Nach Süden geht die Landschaft in das Vorharzgebiet über. Die höchste Erhebung des Landkreises ist mit 323 m ü.
