In contrast to the decorum of much 18th-century verse, he wanted to relate “situations from common life” in “language really used by men,” embodying “the spontaneous overflow of feelings…recollected in tranquility” (preface to Lyrical Ballads [1802]).

Assieme a Samuel Taylor Coleridge è ritenuto il fondatore del Romanticismo e soprattutto del naturalismo inglese, grazie alla pubblicazione nel 1798 delle Lyrical Ballads (Ballate liriche), primo vero e proprio manifesto del movimento in Inghilterra.
