Julia Margaret Cameron is known for painterly photographic portraits of some of the most celebrated figures in Victorian England and for staged allegorical images drawn from poetry, literature, and the Bible. She began photographing in the 1860s at the age of forty-eight, after being given a camera by her daughter and son-in-law.

Julia Margaret Cameron naquit Julia Margaret Pattle le 11 juin 1815 à Calcutta, en Inde, de James Pattle, un fonctionnaire anglo-indien du Bengal Civil Service, et d’Adeline de l'Étang, fille d’aristocrates français. Julia Margaret fut élevée en France et en Angleterre, avant de retourner en Inde en 1834.

Watts wrote to Cameron: Please do not send me valuable mounted copies… send me any… defective unmounted impressions, I shall be able to judge just as well & shall be just as much charmed with success & shall not feel that I am taking money from you.
Artistic Beginnings. Julia Margaret Cameron was born in Calcutta, India in 1815. Her father, James Pattle, was a judge of the Calcutta High Court during British rule. She and her six spirited sisters grew up comfortably as prominent members of Anglo-Indian society. In 1838 she married Charles Hay Cameron, a distinguished jurist and legal reformer.
