In January 2019, she was elevated to become the Majority Leader of the State Assembly, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold the position in the state’s history.

The Assembly member has worked to set up kidney screenings in her district and will continue to work to raise awareness about the ailment, she said. “You never expect to bury your children,” she said.
