The standouts to me were Human Chain, Route 110, "Had I not been awake," and "The door was open and the house was dark," the latter of which I'll copy here because I think it captures what's so elegant and perceptive about Heaney's style:
As a linguist working in poetry, Heaney has few equals. One can imagine an alien or post-human philologist in a hundred million years time deducing the entire functional history of a long dead language from this collection alone. At times we are back at very root of all tongues, in the imitative and emulative copying of environmental sounds.
Human Chain also adapts a poetic 'herbal' by the Breton poet Guillevic - lyrics as delicate as ferns, which puzzle briefly over the world of things which excludes human speech, while affirming the interconnectedness of phenomena, as of a self-sufficiency in which we too are included. Human Chain is Seamus Heaney's twelfth collection of poems.
