Barnard College has been a distinguished leader in higher education for women for over 100 years and is today the most sought after private liberal arts college in the nation. Founded in 1889, the College was the first in New York City, and one of the few in the nation at the time, where women could receive the same rigorous liberal arts education available to men.
The Barnard College Chemistry Department offers courses for undergraduates who plan to major or minor in the physical and life sciences, as well as for students pursuing other liberal arts degrees. The department offers majors and minors in chemistry and biochemistry, both approved by the American Chemical Society.

If a student is admitted and plans to enroll, she must submit official scores. It is the student’s responsibility to direct the College Board or ACT Program to send official test scores to the Office of Admissions. The SAT tests code number for Barnard is 2038. Barnard is the only women’s college, and one of the only small liberal arts colleges nationwide, to offer NCAA Division I athletics. Under the Columbia-Barnard Athletics Consortium, Barnard scholar-athletes compete alongside Columbia undergraduates on 16 teams in the NCAA Division I and the Ivy League.
