Stephen Gyllenhaals Film erinnert thematisch natürlich an den Hit «Der Club der toten Dichter», ohne allerdings dessen Format zu erreichen. «Waterland» irrt zwischen ständigen Zeit- und Perspektivsprüngen umher, die Erzählstandpunkte wechseln nach Belieben.

A good book does not a good film make. "Waterland" puts Irons at the center as a disturbed history teacher who recounts his personal history to his class. Irons performance is excellent as always. However the story is a plaintive and peculiar reflection on what is a rather drab and uneventful life.
