His father, Josiah Franklin, left Northamptonshire, England for America in reaction against the Church of England. Though he tried to have his son educated formally by enrolling him in the Boston Grammar School, Josiah was forced by financial circumstances to bring Benjamin into his tallow chandler and soap boiling business.
Benjamin Franklin was born in Milk Street, Boston, on January 6, 1706. His father, Josiah Franklin, was a tallow chandler who married twice, and of his seventeen children Benjamin was the youngest son. His schooling ended at ten, and at twelve he was bound apprentice to his brother James, a printer, who published the “New England Courant.”

Death and Burial. Josiah Franklin [3] died on January 16, 1745 at age 87 [3] and was buried with his wife in Granary Burying Ground, Boston, Massachusetts. His monument placard reads simply Born: 1655 Died:1744 Aged: 89 [7] Epitaph: Josiah Franklin and Abiah his wife lie here interred. They lived lovingly together in wedlock fifty-five years.
