Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell ( née Stevenson; 29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865), often referred to as Mrs Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor. Her first novel, Mary Barton, was published in 1848.
William Gaskell ( 24 juillet 1805 - 12 juin 1884) est un pasteur unitarien anglais, travailleur caritatif et pionnier de l'éducation de la classe ouvrière. Époux de la romancière et biographe Elizabeth Gaskell, il est lui-même écrivain et poète et est le président le plus ancien de la bibliothèque Portico de 1849 à sa mort en 1884.
William Gaskell was an English Unitarian minister, charity worker and pioneer in the education of the working class. The husband of novelist and biographer Elizabeth Gaskell, he was himself a writer and poet, and acted as the longest-serving Chair of the Portico Library from 1849 to his death in 1884.
He also encouraged Gaskell to include chapters 36 and 37, the dialectical glosses added by William Gaskell, a preface and the chapter epigraphs. The second edition, with Gaskell's corrections, particularly on typographical mistakes when writing the Lancashire dialect, appeared on 3 January 1849. The third edition soon followed, in February.

The stem of the Gaskell family that is of significance to us is that from William Gaskell and Alice Ashall, who married in in 1698/9. Their burial record is one of the earliest held in Cairo Street Chapel. They were the Reverend William Gaskell’s, great-great grandparents, and it is from their eldest son that our branch of the family stems.
