Balliol College was founded in 1263 y John I of Balliol, a landowner from Barnard Castle in County Durham. It’s said that the founder abducted a bishop after a dispute over land and forced him to support a group of Oxford scholars – thus, Balliol College was born.
Balliol College is a thriving academic community in the heart of Oxford. It exists to advance education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to facilitate and to encourage scholarship and research at the very highest levels, and to promote excellence in learning, as one of the colleges within the University of Oxford.
Geschiedenis. Het college werd onder leiding van de bisschop van Durham in 1263 gesticht door John I de Balliol, een Schotse edelman van Picardische oorsprong. Na zijn dood in 1269, maakte zijn weduwe Dervorguilla van Galloway de stichting definitief: ze bracht de nodige goederen in en formuleerde in 1282 de statuten van het college.

After John de Balliol’s death in 1269, his widow, Dervorguilla of Galloway, guaranteed the future of the ‘House of the Scholars of Balliol’ by establishing a permanent endowment and giving it Statutes in 1282 – so bringing into being Balliol College as we know it today.
Balliol College est l'un des colleges constitutifs de l'université d'Oxford au Royaume-Uni. Il se trouve non loin de son rival le Trinity College , situé à Broad Street . Le collège est placé sous la protection de sainte Catherine d'Alexandrie .
