A food web is a graphic representation of a holistic, non-linear web of primary producers, primary consumers, and higher-level consumers used to describe ecosystem structure and dynamics (Figure 3). A food chain always starts with a producer. A producer is an organism that makes its own food. Most food chains start with a green plant, because plants make their own food by photosynthesis.
Food Chains. A food chain represents a single pathway by which energy and matter flow through an ecosystem. An example is shown in Figure below. Food chains are generally simpler than what really happens in nature. Most organisms consume—and are consumed by—more than one species. This food chain includes producers and consumers.
That is, they can form one of the links in a food chain. In ecology, a food chain is a series of organisms that eat one another (so that energy and nutrients flow from one to the next). For example, if you had a hamburger for lunch, you might be part of a food chain that looks like: grass → cow → human.
