They were married in Wiesbaden, Germany on December 16, 1922. They reputedly met when Maria travelled back to Greece from exile in 1920 on board a destroyer that Ioannidis was commanding.[1]

She returned to Greece on a navy ship commanded by Admiral Perikles Ioannidis. They married, despite her daughters objections. The marriage was tested.
