Eliot House is rich in lore and legacy. If the House were in London, it would be covered in the blue plaques that mark distinguished residents and cultural significance. Finley’s legacy is similarly rich, and yet the story of his years at Eliot House — years of vital importance for the university and the country — has never been told.

Eliot House celebrates the life and legacy of a remarkable figure who would be described as “a living embodiment of Harvard.” Many knew Finley’s magisterial public persona, but few knew the story of how he became this figure — or what he gave up in order to do so.
Eliot House sits on the site formerly occupied by the Boston Elevated power house. It was funded by a gift of Edward Stephen Harkness. Eliot House initially housed male students and became co-educational in 1972 then opened to Radcliffe College women. A central kitchen connected to Kirkland House was expanded in 1988.

Eliot House is one of twelve residential houses for upperclassmen at Harvard University and one of the seven original houses at the College. Opened in 1931, the house was named after Charles William Eliot, who served as president of the university for forty years (1869–1909).
Hello Eliot! I am thrilled to start my fifth year as Resident Dean of Eliot House. I am joined at Eliot by my husband, Ajay Sonalkar, and our eight-year-old son, Ziv. I grew up in a tiny town (population=2500!) in rural Missouri (in case you were wondering, yes there were definitely more cows than people).
