From 1891 to 1896, Lady Macdonald leased Earnscliffe to the Commander of the Canadian Militia, Major-General Ivor Caradoc Herbert (1851-1933), 1st Baron Treowen, and his wife, the Hon. Albertina Agnes Mary Denison (1854-1929).

Susan Agnes Macdonald, 1st Baroness Macdonald of Earnscliffe (née Bernard; 24 August 1836 – 5 September 1920) was the second wife of Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada. She was born near Spanish Town, Jamaica to The Hon. Thomas James Bernard (d.1850), of Bellevue, south of Montego Bay ; member of the Privy Council of Jamaica .
They married on 16 February 1867, and had one daughter, Margaret Mary Theodora Macdonald, who was born severely handicapped, both mentally and physically. On the first voyage of the transcontinental voyage of the Canadian railroad, Macdonald built Agnes a platform on the cowcatcher of the train and had a chair nailed to it so she could see the land united by the train.
