Há 2 dias · There is no doubt, however, that from 1635 the manor was in the hands of John Paulet Marquess of Winchester, known as the 'great loyalist' in consequence of his heroic defence of Basing House. (fn. 90) After the fail of his garrison he was imprisoned in the Tower and his lands sequestered for delinquency; part was ordered by the Parliament to be sold.

William, created marquis of Winchester in 1551, died in 1572, when his son John sold the manor with 430 a. to Richard Bidgood and William Tucker of North Petherton.

Há 3 dias · In 1574 John Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, sold Boreham to Thomas Webb of Beckington (Som.), clothier. In 1590 Thomas's son Robert sold the manor to Alexander Staples of Yate (Glos.). (fn. 63) His son Richard, who succeeded him in the same year, (fn. 64) sold parts of the property, (fn. 65) and by 1656 apparently only retained the demesne farm.
Há 5 dias · After his death in 1566 the manor was held in dower by his widow Winifred, who married Sir John Paulet, marquess of Winchester (d. 1576). Richard's son Thomas, who became earl of Dorset, sold the reversion of the manor in 1571 to John Dister, who gained possession in 1575.
