One of these even happened before what many considered the start of the war (the invasion of Poland by Germany in September of 1939.) I am speaking about the brutal Japanese invasion of China in the mid 30's.

"The World At War" is one of the best World War II Documentaries ever made, with one of the best ‘overviews’ of each segment of the war. Sometimes taking a few months of time and going through all the action on every front and back home too, while at other times giving an in depth history of a particular area as needed, such as a entire episode explaining in full the Siege of Stalingrad.
