André Masséna, Prince of Essling, Duke of Rivoli , was a French military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Many of Napoleon's generals were trained at the finest French and European military academies, however Masséna was among those who achieved greatness without the benefit of formal education.
1758-1817. Originally eager to go to sea, Andre Massena found life on the waves was not what it should be and so set out for a career in the French army. Very quickly he discovered he had made the right choice and rose rapidly to sergeant. Despite his promise, the army released Massena in 1789 and he took up smuggling on the Cote d'Azure.

André Masséna ( italiensk Andrea Massena, født 6. mai 1758 i Nice i Frankrike, død 4. april 1817 i Paris) var en fransk militær underoffiser under revolusjonskrigene og napoleonskrigene. Han ble gjort til hertug av Rivoli i 1808, fyrste av Essling i 1810 og marskalk av Frankrike i 1804.
