Eleanor Powell Facts. She was 2 years old when her father deserted Eleanor and her mother. She was subsequently raised by her mother and maternal grandparents. Growing up, Eleanor Powell was an extremely shy child who was not even able to greet guests visiting their house. So, her mother enrolled her in dance lessons to help overcome her shyness.
Eleanor Powell Powell's best films include "Broadway Melody of 1936" (1935), which made her a star, its two sequels from 1938 and 1940 (the latter featuring her legendary "Begin the Beguine" duet with Astaire), and "Born to Dance" (1936).
