Lord Soames was born in 1948 and was educated at Eton College and Mons Officer Cadet School. He is the son of The Late Lord Soames and grandson of Sir Winston Churchill KG. Nicholas was a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1983 to 2019. He was made a Privy Counsellor in 2011 and knighted in 2014. He was appointed a Life Peer in October 2022.
Mons Officer Cadet School was a British military training establishment for officer cadets in Aldershot from 1942 to 1972, when it was closed and all officer training concentrated at Sandhurst. Until 1960, it was known as the Mons Officer Cadet Training Unit .

Mons Barracks was originally constructed from 1926 to 1927 for the Royal Signals. [1] In 1939, Sandhurst became the home of 161 Infantry Officer Cadet Training Unit (RMC): [2] that unit moved to Mons Barracks at Aldershot in 1942, and subsequently became known as the "Mons Officer Cadet Training Unit (Aldershot)". [2]
Adrian Freer was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment from Mons Officer Cadet School in 1972. His regimental service included tours in all three parachute battalions; platoon commander and adjutant in 1 PARA, a rifle company commander in 3 PARA and commanding officer 2 PARA as well as Commander 5 Airborne Brigade.

Former President David Granger succeeded Colonel Pilgrim as Commander in 1979. “The People’s National Congress extends sincere condolences to Colonel Pilgrim’s widow and children,” the statement concluded.
