Whatever your Superman origin story is, The Man of Steel is a great weekend escape, which makes for a phenomenal reading experience. The Man of Steel by John Byrne with Dick Giordano is available as a part of the trade paperback collection, Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 1.
It's difficult to express how important and influential John Byrne was to superhero comics, because you have to work hard to explain that he's probably not crazy. He seems a strong personality with egomaniacal tendencies, and his opinions are usually those of an experienced idiot with no capacity for growth or question.

In 1987 rock musician Joe Satriani released an album named 'Surfing with the Alien', which featured an image of a 'Silver Surfer' comic by Byrne. Byrne claimed in an interview that this image was used without his permission and that he wasn't paid for it.
The Man of Steel is a 1986 comic book limited series featuring the DC Comics character Superman. Written and drawn by John Byrne, the series was presented in six issues which were inked by Dick Giordano. The series told the story of Superman's modern origin, which had been rebooted following the 1985–1986 series Crisis on Infinite Earths .
