He was one of seven pitchers to receive first-place votes; in order of overall finish (Dave McNally 5, Sam McDowell 4, Mike Cuellar 6, Jim Palmer 1, Clyde Wright 1, Ron Perranoski 1). McDowell probably should have earned his only Cy Young Award.
