This seventeenth running of the race marked its rebirth after a decade-long hiatus due to World War II. It also saw the beginning of the Ferrari legend as Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon drove the 166 MM to victory on the marque’s début appearance.

Luigi Chinetti won the race for a third time in the first Ferrari barchetta by driving 22.5 hours. This race also saw the death of British driver Pierre Maréchal when his Aston Martin DB2 was in.
