Williams's poetry often occurs in the moments preceding a dramatic turn of events. For example, “The Great Figure” describes the visceral experience of a firetruck speeding past the speaker on its way to an emergency. In doing so, the poem gives the reader the moment before the overt climax of arriving at the fire.
