Julian Barnes was born in Leicester, England on January 19, 1946. He was educated at the City of London School from 1957 to 1964 and at Magdalen College, Oxford, from which he graduated in modern languages (with honors) in 1968.
Julian Barnes began writing about art with a chapter on Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa in his 1989 novel A History of the World in 10½ Chapters. Since then he has written a series of remarkable essays, chiefly about French artists, which trace the story of how art made its way from Romanticism to Realism and into Modernism.

Julian Patrick Barnes ( Leicester, 19 januari 1946) is een Brits schrijver. Zijn boeken zijn in meer dan dertig talen vertaald; zijn bekendste werk is Flaubert's Parrot uit 1984. Naast zijn eigen naam gebruikt Barnes ook verschillende pseudoniemen zoals Dan Kavanagh, Edward Pygge en Basil Seal .
