David John (D.J.) Thomas was born in Johnstown, Carmarthenshire in 1876 and lived in a cottage called The Poplars. D.J’s father Evan joined the South West Railways in 1852 and was known as ‘Thomas the Guard’; but his son won a scholarship to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he gained a first-class honours degree in English.
