Escritor norte-americano de etnia judaica, Saul Bellow nasceu a 10 de junho de 1915 em Lachine, nas cercanias de Montreal, no Canadá. Filho de judeus russos que haviam imigrado dois anos antes do seu nascimento, viveu num bairro desfavorecido de Montreal até 1924, altura em que a família se decidiu mudar para Chicago.
Saul Bellow è stato uno dei più grandi narratori americani moderni: grande per abbondanza, per precisione, per varietà, ricchezza e vigore. La sua prosa esuberante, fatta di frasi audaci, da un lato riecheggia gli augusti retaggi di Melville e Whitman, Lawrence e Joyce, fino a Shakespeare; dall’altro si illumina di un’intelligenza acuta, che sfocia nella comicità caustica.

Saul Bellow (født 10. juni 1915, død 5. april 2005) var en canadisk-født amerikansk jødisk forfatter. Bellow var professor ved flere universiteter ( Minnesota , Princeton , New York og Chicago ), og regnes blandt de største amerikanske romanforfattere efter 2. verdenskrig .
