The old earl’s body was brought to Witley Court for burial and was laid to rest in a large red granite sarcophagu­s in the crypt of the attached Church of Saint Michael and All Angels.

Ward died in April 1823, aged 73, and was succeeded by his son John, who served as Foreign Secretary and was created Earl of Dudley in 1827. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Dudley and Ward of Dudley, co. Worcester [G.B., 1763] on 10 October 1788.
