Francis, educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge (of which he became an honorary Fellow in 1979), spent his early adult years - as he put it himself - “pottering about”.

Francis Leslie Pym est né le 13 février 1922 à Abergavenny, comté de Monmouth, au Pays de Galles, dans une famille qui avait fourni des dirigeants politiques à la Grande-Bretagne pendant des siècles. He was Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire from 1961 to 1987. Pym was made a life peer in 1987.
