He was 17 and a student at Phillips Exeter Academy preparing for Harvard when his father entered the White House in 1861. Robert joined the Union Army in 1864 and was made a captain and assistant adjutant general of volunteers on the staff of Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.
