Em um especial de TV da dupla na década de 1950, foi gravado um quadro cômico no qual apareceu o Monstro da Lagoa Negra, surgido em um filme de 1954. O filme foi relançado em 1956 juntamente com Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff.
O filme é uma modesta produção, levemente baseada na vida do corsário escocês William Kidd. Charles Laughton repetiu o papel-título anos mais tarde, em Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd . A trilha sonora, composta por Werner Janssen, foi indicada ao Oscar.

11 de mai. de 2011 · Of Abbott and Costello's 36 feature-length comedies, all but two were out on DVD until last April, when Warner Home Video finally released the last holdouts, Rio Rita (1942) and Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd (1952), as part of their Warner Archive Collection. The latter film is particularly welcome even though it's not very good.
