He gained massive popularity for playing Phillip Watters in the television series Chicago Hope (1994–2000) and Ed Alzate in the television series Last Man Standing (2011–2021).

He appeared in the 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. In 1979, Elizondo appeared in the film Cuba. He went on to star in the film American Gigolo a year later.
