20 de set. de 1983 · Winter's Tale is a mess - it's a long book (almost 800 pages in its most recent edition), and throughout all that length I could never find a real story that it wanted to tell. Ostensibly it's the story of Peter Lake, an orphan and professional thief of mysterious past and his whimsical and serious adventures in a magical New York City.
The shepherd has raised Perdita as his daughter in Bohemia, while Leontes continues to mourn his wife and dead children in Sicilia. At the court of Polixenes, Camillo asks the king whether he can return to Sicilia. Leontes has apologized for driving Camillo away, and Camillo wants to return to his homeland.
"Winter's Tale" tells the story of a thief, a consumptive heiress, and a sentient magical white horse, but, really, it is the story of New York City in Helprin's imagination, a place like the one in reality but with some strange alterations. The Hudson freezes solid for miles, and people set up tent cities along the ice.
