Richard was born in 1572, the second but eldest surviving son of Ulick Burke and his wife Honora Burke. His father was the 3rd Earl of Clanricarde. His father's family was Old English and descended from William de Burgh (died 1206) who arrived in Ireland during the reign of King Henry II, and was the founder of the House of Burgh in Ireland.
Honora Burke became Honora FitzJames, Duchess of Berwick on Tweed (c. 1675 – 1698), married Patrick Sarsfield and went into French exile where he followed her soon afterwards. After his death at the Battle of Landen , she married James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick , an illegitimate son of James II .

Honora de Burgo (1675-1698) Honora De Burgo was born about 1675 at Portumna Castle, Co. Galway. She was the youngest daughter of William Burke, the seventh and late Earl of Clanricarde. She was half-sister to the living Earl and his brother Lord Bophin, and she was Lord Galway's sister, Lord Mountcashel's niece and Lord Clancarty's cousin.
