Hopper was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. As a child, she attended a preparatory school in New Jersey. Later, she enrolled at Vassar College. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Hopper went to Yale University, where she earned her Masters and Ph.D. in Mathematics. Afterwards she began teaching at Vassar.

In an early October ceremony complete with live music, speeches and aquatic-themed desserts, Grace Hopper College unveiled a six-foot brass trident that will hang permanently in the college’s dining hall. Originally proposed by Hopper students in 2019, the trident is a project years in the making.
