Abstract. This part provides an introduction and synopsis of the Discourse on Metaphysics. It explains the significance and character of the Discourse and briefly relates a few facts about its composition. It also explains the reason for a new translation, the style of the translation, and the nature and purpose of the commentary.

Published in 1686, the Discourse on Metaphysics consists of Leibniz's expansion of a letter to his theologian friend Antoine Arnauld, in which he explains that through our perceptions we express the rest of the universe from our own unique perspectives.
