William Stafford (1914-1993) was one of the most prolific and important American poets of the last half of the twentieth century. He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, served as a conscientious objector in a series of work camps during World War II, and taught for thirty years at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon, as well as traveling the world to share the gospel of poetry.

William Stafford (courtier) Sir William Stafford, of Chebsey, in Staffordshire (c. 1508 – 5 May 1556) was an Essex landowner and the second husband of Mary Boleyn, who was the sister of Anne Boleyn and one-time mistress of King Henry VIII of England .
William Stafford was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1914. His first major collection of poems, Traveling Through the Dark (1962), was published when he was 48. Stafford was the author of 65 books of poetry, including The Rescued Year (1966), Stories That Could Be True: New and Collected Poems (1977), and An Oregon Message (1987).
