Oakland Tech's Athletic Director is Dr. Alexis Gray-Lawson, who helped lead Tech to its second state basketball title in 2005. At UC Berkeley, Gray-Lawson holds the Golden Bears’ all-time record for three-pointers made, with a total of 148. She signed with the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA in 2011.

The school has undergone a dramatic transformation as it lacked ground security after COVID-19 and tightened it up. Ever since security has become harsher, many students have felt that the school is a "prison" because there is only one way in and out, which is the main gate.
Oakland Technical High School seniors have the option of a more flexible school-day schedule to participate in college dual enrollment, concurrent enrollment, internship programs or work.
