Even though the Finnish territory was spared of most of the fighting, it witnessed a series of military operations for three and a half months during the Civil War (January 27 th – May 15 th , 1918).
By shifting the balance of class forces within and throughout Europe, the First World War thus made possible the transformation of European societies that emerged after the Second World War. In these ways, Halperin writes, the ‘First World War represents a great divide in modern European history’ (‘War and Social Revolution’, p. 194).
