As well as gaining flying skills helicopter pupils also take survival and leadership courses. All helicopter training is carried out at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, RAF Shawbury, which provides instruction for pupils from all three Services using the the Bell Griffin HT1 and Eurocopter Squirrel HT1.

Trainee Australian pilots were posted to the school after completing basic flight training at No. 1 Flying Training School RAAF. The ADFHS then provided these pilots with initial helicopter training. After gaining their wings at the ADFHS, Army pilots completed their training at the School of Army Aviation in Oakey, Queensland.

The school, established in 1997, is a tri-service organisation and trains helicopter aircrews for all three British armed forces, using the Airbus H135 Juno HT1 and Airbus H145 Jupiter HT1 helicopters.
