Colyear became governor of Gibralter in 1713 and colonel of the Royal Scots Dragoons the following year. He married Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester See J. General David Colyear, 1st Earl of Portmore KT PC (c. 1656 – 2 January 1730) was a Scottish general and Governor of Gibraltar.. Life. He was the elder son of Sir Alexander Robertson, of the family of Strowan, Perthshire, who settled in Holland, where he acquired a considerable property, and adopted the name of Colyear.

Charles Colyear, 2nd Earl of Portmore was born on 27 August 1700. He was the son of David Colyear, 1st Earl of Portmore and Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester.
