Ellen Axson Wilson (1860-1914), the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson, was a reform-minded First Lady and an artist in the American Impressionist style. Born in Savannah Georgia in 1860, Ellen demonstrated artistic ability from an early age. From 1875 to 1878 she studied art with Helen F. Fairchild at the Female College in Rome, Georgia.

Her bronze memorial dedicated in 2015 commemorates the achievements of this amazing Renaissance woman, who not only touched Rome, but also the world around her.
Ellen Axson was the daughter of a Georgia Presbyterian minister, and she studied art in New York City before marrying Woodrow Wilson in 1885. She brought up three daughters and followed her husband’s academic and political career, from Bryn Mawr and Princeton to the New Jersey State House and the White House.
