This is the first retrospective of the whole spectrum of Rodchenko’s work, and it has been done with the enthusiastic cooperation of Varvara, Rodchenko’s photographer/designer daughter, who contributes a memoir of her father to the catalogue, and Alexander Larionov, her son, also a designer, who now works in the Institute of Industrial Design in Moscow.

Alexander Rodchenko was one of the founding members of Russian Constructivism. After the October Revolution of 1917, he became increasingly involved with government sponsored organizations that advocated the integration of art with everyday life, which led him and other like-minded artists to reject traditional art forms such as easel painting and to search for more utilitarian expressions.
– In the text for his automonography, Rodchenko summed up, «I consider the stage I passed in art to be important for leading it onto the path of the initiative industry”, thus marking his transition to “production art”. – In addition to graphics and easel paintings, Alexander was engaged in spatial structures.
A retrospective of prolific Russian artist Alexander Rodchenko took place in 1979. One of the founders of Russian design and the constructivism aesthetic, his work takes painting, sculpture, graphic design and photography and has been extremely influential on later artists and designers.
